Eating Gluten and Dairy Free
What is gluten and why is it causing problems for so many people?
Gluten is a type of protein found in wheat, barley and rye. You'll find it in most cereals, breads and pasta and unfortunately in many unexpected places like soy sauce!
There is no coincidence that gluten sounds like a derivative of glue, because this is exactly what it does - it binds and thickens foods. So you can only imagine what eating gluey food does to your intestines. The most common sings of gluten intolerance include: bloating, gas, indigestion and cramping.
The huge trend in gluten-free foods reflects a growing number of people having difficulty digesting it. Research has suggested as much as 10%-15% of the population are now gluten intolerant.
Looking at it from an energetic perspective, gluten has a dulling effect on the body, as well as an increased appetite for sugar as so much energy is spent trying to digest it.
What about dairy?
Dairy products include anything made from animal’s milk including cream, butter, yogurt and cheese. But these are just the obvious ones - milk powder and butter can be found in a lot of cakes, biscuits, chocolates and processed foods too.
We grow up being told that dairy is our best source of calcium and is essential for our growth and bone development. But how many animals eat another species' milk?
In actual fact we're just not designed to eat dairy because we don't have the four stomachs that a calf does. This makes dairy difficult for us to digest and many people find that eating dairy contributes to allergies, mucous build up and sinus problems, particularly in young children.
Looking at it from an energetic perspective we crave dairy for comfort which is no surprise that the typical foods associated with diary are rich and indulgent like chocolate and ice-cream.
